The first cab off the ranks in our previews of the 2025 West Gippsland football and netball seasons are last year’s senior’s footy grand final winners, the ever-resilient Fish Creek Kangaroos.
The Fish Creek Kangaroos will kick off the 2025 campaign by unfurling the senior premiership flag during round one of the Mid-Gippsland Football Netball League against Yinnar on Saturday, April 5.
It will be one of the first official duties for new president Travis Manne, who said numbers at training across all grades of football and netball continue to grow.
“The Under 18 football is really pleasing as Tarwin and Fishy have decided to have their own stand-alone teams, and after some hard work in the off season it looks like we will be able to achieve this,” Travis said.
“It will be a big challenge for new coach Liam Edgelow, who has taken on the role after being of great assistance to Col McPhee last year.”
Toby Redpath and Dewy Moon will oversee the Reserves again, and after leading the club to two senior premierships, coach Jarrod Walker said there was a pleasing level of excitement and energy around the group.
“We have recruited well with utility Jacob Lamers from Leongatha, mid/forward Brodie Shaw, who played senior footy with Tommy Cameron and Ryan McGannon at Mt Eliza, and mid-fielder Luke Williams, who is originally from Sale and played at Gippsland Power with assistant coach Matthew McGannon and former Fish Creek junior – and now Gold Coast Sun Sam Flanders,” Jarrod said.
The news is just as positive from the netball court with the appointment of coaches Jayde McGlead (A Grade), Maddi Carew (B Grade), Beth Pratt (C Grade), Ashleigh Jordan (D Grade), Fiona McPhee Under 17, Jasmine Manne (under 15) and Katie Hamilton (under 13).
“We will be filling all teams this year, and as well as welcoming back a few players after a year or two off to travel, or have babies, we’ve also got a handful of new faces,” Jayde said.
A and D Grades are looking to go one step further this year and B and C are looking to improve on their results from last season.
The club will again field teams in the Leongatha and District Netball Association to manage the overflow of players and those juniors looking to play in the Under 11 age group.
Important upcoming dates are practice matches against Korumburra Bena FNC on March 15 and Yarram FNC on March 22, and the annual fundraising camp draft at Yanakie on March 29 and 30.
